18 September 2008Fire protection at River Mountain Ranch
The community of River Mountain Ranch is leading the way in protecting its residents and property from fire, following the installation of a GALAXY® water tank. Nestled on 2,000 acres in picturesque Texas Hill Country, the development’s residents rely on wells for their daily water needs, making the community vulnerable in the event of fire.
Completed in May 2008, the 20,000 gallon GALAXY® water tank was installed for the exclusive use of the nearby Wimberley Fire Department during a fire related emergency.
The tank features an underground water line that runs to within 10 feet of the street, where a two and a half inch fire fighting fitting is located for easy connection to a fire truck. Access to the water is protected by a fire department controlled “Knox lock”.
River Mountain Ranch property owners were enthusiastic about the tank and worked collaboratively with the Wimberley Fire Department to bring the project to fruition.
“We had tremendous support from the Wimberley Fire Department,” said Mr John Tanzillo, Secretary of the River Mountain Ranch Property Owners Association. “The Fire Department worked with us to identify the best site for the tank as well as the type of and location for the fire fighting connection.” he said.
A secondary benefit of the project is a reduction in insurance premiums for property owners within 1,000 feet of the tank. The River Mountain Ranch POA is considering installing additional tanks in the neighborhood.
Mr Tanzillo highlighted the importance of the GALAXY® water tank to his community. “Thankfully we haven’t had to use water from the tank. However, it gives our community tremendous peace of mind to know that the tank is standing full to protect life and property in the event of a fire.” he said.
