When the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department went looking for a new water storage tank for its Zilker Park Nature Preserve, aesthetics were very important. “We wanted a tank that fit in with the natural surroundings,” said John McKennis, Project Coordinator with the City of Austin.
The Parks and Recreation Department decided on a WATERHARVEST CLASSIC™ water storage tank. “Our new water storage tank blends in with its surroundings and looks like it has always been there.” Mr McKennis added.
The WATERHARVEST CLASSIC™ water storage tank collects rainwater off the roof of the Wildlife Exhibits Building. The building is home to rescued animals that are unable to survive in the wild.
Stored water will be used for landscape irrigation. The Parks and Recreation Department took the opportunity to make the building’s guttering ready for rainwater collection during a recent reroofing project.
WATERHARVEST CLASSIC™ water storage tanks are made from galvanized steel and feature a leaf and debris catchment filter to minimize build up of organic matter in the tank. The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department’s tank also features an optional first flush diverter. First flush diverters are an important step in achieving good water quality for rainwater collection off roof surfaces. They can also reduce tank maintenance by preventing the first flush of water, which can contain bacteria, sediments or chemical residue, from entering the tank.
Designated as a preserve in 1935, the 60 acre Zilker Nature Preserve attracts thousands of visitors each year.
